Witnessing History // Mastercard UEFA Champions League

MasterCard had sponsored the UEFA Champions League for a few years but had never made a real impact. The brief was to make MasterCard more relevant and engaging with Champions League fans.

We came up with an idea based on a simple truth; fans love to witness history in the making. They travel the world to support their teams and see them play. Rolling with the highs and the lows. MasterCard is a facilitator, making it easier for fans to buy tickets, travel to the games and enjoy the event. We distilled it down to - Witnessing History: Priceless.

We created a 60 second TV spot to launch the idea. Recreating the great highs and lows from Champions League history. Authenticity was key, so we used actual fans from the supporter’s clubs across Europe and brought them together, wearing the correct team kits from each era.

We shot with the directing duo 'Double Act' on the RED digital camera.

Print and poster campaign for national press and around key stadiums in UK and Europe.

Venue Experiential

Freestanding frames in host cities allowed fans to gather and create their own ‘Witnessing History’ moments. Ad vans also allowed people to send in their own images of them supporting their team and see them live around the city.

Online and App

We created content encouraging people to prove how big a superfan they actually are and upload it to our website for a chance to win tickets to big games.

The app allowed fans to create their own branded moments using our template and also included a playful red and yellow card to pull out at the pub or at games - backed by refereeing legend Pierluigi Collina.
